Rosacea Causes

Although there have been numerous scientific studies on rosacea the exact origin of this disease remains a mystery. They have identified some suspected causes of generating the disease:

  • Bacterial infection. micrococci and Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Weather exposure.
  • Alteration psychosomatic.
  • Gastrointestinal disease. Gastrointestinal disorders such as gastric alkaline acloridria and atrophy of the jejunal mucosa, but none have been confirmed. Nor has demonstrated an association with alcohol excess carbohydrates, caffeine and spicy foods.
  • Altered vasomotor. The intense redness and facial telangiectasia many authors have oriented toward finding a vasomotor disturbance, but it seems that there would be more functional than structural.
  • Abnormalities of the sebaceous glands. It has been postulated a causal relationship with the hypertrophy of the sebaceous glands and the effect on meibomian glands. No differences were found in the lipid composition of the skin of rosacea patients, or treatment with tetracycline affects the composition of the meibomian glands.
  • Demodex folliculorum. Described a higher frequency of Demodex infestation of the skin follicles and eyelashes in rosacea patients versus controls, and so have been associated with eyelid lesions but not lesions of the eyeball. In any case, the general consensus by more recent studies is that the demodex not only plays an etiologic role in rosacea.

Rosacea is an inherited tendency. Exposure to sun, heat and alcohol make it worse.
